Popularising any academic discipline is vital, in my humble opinion. It was something that I tried to do in order to communicate theology to young people in a way they could access. But then I am a heretic ;) playing the academic game is fine - but when you're working in an area, such as climate science, that affects people's lives now and will continue to do so into the future, I believe you have followed a morally correct path of trying to share that information as best you can.
